How to make a black background in stories?

There are several ways to make a black background in Instagram* stories. Let's list the most popular ones.

Option 1

If you are creating a story from scratch, this option is best.

Step 1

Go to Instagram*, click the plus sign, and select "Story."

Step 2

Select a photo from the gallery – a neutral background will automatically be added to it upon uploading.

Step 3

Click the three dots at the top right and select "Drawing."

Step 4

Choose the marker tool – it's the far left in the top row, and then the color.

Step 5

Press anywhere on the screen and hold for a couple of seconds. After that, the entire screen will become black.

Step 6

In the top row on the right, select "Eraser" and increase the size.

Step 7

Erase the area where the image should be with the eraser. You can either follow its clear boundaries or make random lines.

Everything is ready! Publish!

Option 2

If you already have a published post and want to create a story with a photo on a black background based on it, you can use this method.

Step 1

Select the post and click the airplane. Then swipe right to left and click "Add post to your story." The background for stories will be selected automatically.

Click the three dots at the top right and select "Drawing."

Step 3

Choose the marker from the top left, and black color at the bottom left.

Step 4

Press anywhere on the screen and hold for a couple of seconds.

Use third-party editors

There are special applications that allow you to create stylish and original backgrounds for Instagram stories. For example, Canva, Mojo, StoryLuxe, CutStory, all of them allow you to edit images, add original backgrounds, and various elements. After editing the photo, simply save the finished picture and upload it to stories.

How to enable night mode in Instagram*?

But maybe you don't need a black background for stories, just a night theme? The dark theme reduces eye strain and lowers screen brightness. There is such a mode in Instagram*. To activate it, proceed as follows:

  • go to your profile;
  • click the hamburger menu at the top right and go to settings;
  • select "Accessibility" and then "Night mode" there;
  • enable it.
